Autumn Meteorite Tokyo is a festival centered around the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Toshima-city. As one of the main programs of Tokyo Festival 2026, Autumn Meteorite aims to create opportunities for audiences to experience the “here and now” of the Japanese and global performing arts scenes through a diverse range of programs—making them more accessible, encouraging direct, personal connection and resonance, inviting discoveries of various realities, and opening new perspectives from which to reconsider the world we inhabit. The festival’s Artistic Director is playwright and novelist Toshiki Okada, who is highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally for his unique methodology exploring the relationship between language and the body as well as for his sharp insight into contemporary society. The festival program has three main categories: the “Performance Program,” comprising 13 diverse works of performing art from Japan and abroad; the “Non-Performance Program,” consisting of lectures, workshops, and other events; and the “Hello and Welcome (Attendee Support)” program, which provides support throughout the festival. Performance Program Highlights: ・Theatre Nohgaku English Noh "Blue Moon Over Memphis,” a dream noh play wherein the ghost of Elvis Presley encounters Judy, a die-hard Elvis fan. Theatre Nohgaku was founded in 2000 by Richard Emmert, along with other English-speaking students of noh, and continues to be active worldwide. While remaining faithful to the traditions of noh—including the noh stage, hayashi (instrumental performers), jiutai (chorus), mai (dance), and honka-dori (allusive variation)—the production incorporates elements of American culture such as blues, gospel, Elvis Presley’s hit songs, newly created noh masks modeled after American musical icons, and a denim costume. ・Chikako Yamashiro "Recalling(s) — Theatrical Version,” a strikingly powerful work, which expresses the multi-layered nature of history and memory in both content and form. Initially presented as an installation at the Artizon Museum in 2025, the work was reconfigured for the theatrical space at the Naha Cultural Arts Theater NAHArt. For this edition of Autumn Meteorite 2026 Tokyo, the composition has been further reconfigured for the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. In this version, the audience moves through the space while viewing the work. As the performance unfolds, the audience’s perspective and sensory experience shift, creating an experience within the theatrical space where multiple memories, voices, and bodies overlap.

Tokyo Poetry Week: Autumn 2026 is a series of poetry events that create a rare intersection of the city’s diverse poetic communities: from visual poets and Japanese tanka poets to multilingual poets from the international diaspora, the festival brings together poets and artists to interact, collaborate and sometimes create. Previous editions included a poem written live on the bodies of Butoh dancers and a haiku collage workshop for creating visual haiku, to name a few. This year, Tokyo Poetry Week is back with its mix of performances, experiments, workshops, talks and book launches across several venues all over Tokyo, including The Den in Koenji, Haremame in Daikanyama and the A.I.R. building, in Nihonbashi. One of the first events in the program is a talk event on architecture and poetry on October 13 by professor Jordan A.Y. Smith from UCLA and editor at Tokyo Poetry Journal in conversation with Zoria Petkoska K, director of Tokyo Poetry Week. Visual Poetry Night on October 15 at The Den, in Koenji, is co-organized with Concrete Poetry Party Osaka and features experimental poets, poetry films, poetry games and merch, a pop-up library of rare visual poetry books and more. Another highlight is the launch of a new volume by the Tokyo Poetry Journal on October 17. The event will feature a Q&A with the editors and even tarot card readings as the new volume's themes are centered around storytelling, legend and myth. Tokyo Poetry Week will conclude with a reading that is structured like a slumber party — with poets reading in a bed and a poetry zines corner. This will be part of the bigger Levels event organized by More Than Music. Tokyo Poetry Week is not only about listening and spectating, but also about connecting, meeting fellow literature lovers and learning via workshops. There will be several workshops, available only with prior sign up. Also, the Drunk Poets See God open mic on October 16 is a partner event which is part of the schedule and is a free sign-up, first-come-first-served event where anyone can read their poems even if they are work in progress.

Traces of Being presents a series of photographs by BADAY exploring fragments of encounters between the photographer and the world. Rather than placing the photographer at the center, the images reveal his presence indirectly through landscapes, fleeting scenes, obscured faces, objects and traces of everyday life. Together, they form a series of incidental self-portraits, offering quiet evidence of where he was, what he noticed and the moments he chose to capture.

Shin Hanagata’s Ergonomic Embryo is a performance exploring the boundary between humans and technology through the idea of becoming a chair. Wearing head-mounted displays, the performers watch AI-generated images of their bodies being transformed into chair-like forms in real time, gradually changing their movements and postures in an attempt to physically transform. Combining performance, AI, motion capture and media art, the work questions how technology shapes human behaviour and expands our ideas of what a body can become. The performance is presented as part of Performing Arts Festival: Autumn Meteorite 2026 Tokyo.

Chikako Yamashiro’s Recalling(s) – Theatrical Version explores the layered memories of war across Okinawa, Tokyo and Palau. Combining video, testimony, performance, music and comedy across multiple screens, the work brings together different voices, bodies and landscapes connected to the history of the Second World War. Originally presented as an installation at Artizon Museum in 2025, this new theatrical version has been adapted for Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, with audiences moving through the space as the performance unfolds.
