The Behind the Scenes series explores the stories behind Tokyo's creative projects. This time, we feature Tokyo Morning Beats., an event-based community that seamlessly blends music with activities like running and yoga, swapping alcohol for coffee.

Behind its mission to bring cool, healthy experiences to urban mornings lies a simple wish: to bring people together and inspire them to enjoy their mornings and everyday lives to the fullest.

Tokyo Morning Beats.

Tokyo Morning Beats. organizes events that offer a new way to experience urban mornings through music, coffee, and running. Its programs combine DJ sets with activities such as running and yoga, creating experiences that bring music, movement, and coffee together.

What began as a small party in an office in Yotsuya, Tokyo, in October 2025 has grown into an event attracting 100 to 200 people on weekend mornings. In July 2026, Tokyo Morning Beats. held its first event in Osaka, marking another step in its expansion beyond Tokyo.

Could you please introduce yourselves?

Tokyo Morning Beats. is run by three core members.

Koki Matsunaga focuses on community design, planning and producing exhibitions and cultural projects while creating spaces that foster new connections between people and between people and their cities.

Gen Tsukakoshi works across a variety of creative fields, including fashion, painting, music, and graphic design.

Koki Shimizu works across a broad range of fields, from branding to experience design.

What inspired you to start Tokyo Morning Beats.?

Tokyo offers plenty of ways to enjoy the night. But we felt that mornings were often spent simply commuting to work or school, leaving little room to discover the city's charm.

We've always loved club music, especially the energy it creates and those moments when strangers come together through music in a shared space. However, in Tokyo, enjoying club music often means late nights, alcohol, and a somewhat closed-off underground atmosphere. There were very few healthier, more accessible options that could naturally become part of everyday life, which was what we were looking for.

"Could we bring the energy of music and the excitement of unexpected encounters from the night into the morning?" We wondered if we could preserve the energy of club culture while creating a music experience that would make the day ahead better, rather than sacrificing the next day for a night out. That question sparked the idea for Tokyo Morning Beats. (Tsukakoshi & Matsunaga)

How did the three of you come to work together?

Matsunaga and Tsukakoshi first met at a company where Matsunaga previously worked. Later, they met Shimizu through an exhibition they were both involved in, and the three began building a connection.

Tokyo Morning Beats. began in October 2025 with a small party held in an office in Yotsuya, organized primarily by Matsunaga and Tsukakoshi. Shimizu was not part of the original team, but he resonated with the event's concept and its vision of creating a new way to experience mornings through music, eventually joining the team.

Although each member brings different experiences and areas of expertise, they share a common goal: to create something that has never existed before in Tokyo's mornings. Today, they work together on planning, creative direction, and event production to bring that vision to life.

How would each of you describe one another?

We're friends outside of events and projects too, so it's actually pretty hard to step back and think about how we'd describe each other now. (laughs)

Something like this, I guess! (laughs)
I think we all agree on these, and each of us feels they’re pretty accurate too.

What has been the most memorable experience while running the community?

One of the most memorable moments was seeing someone who had arrived alone laughing with people they had just met by the time they left. We also saw participants continuing to connect outside of our events, forming new friendships and even starting new activities together. These moments made us realize that we weren't simply organizing morning events. We were creating new connections between people and the city.

Another big discovery was that many participants were experiencing a morning DJ event for the first time. We realized that people don't need to be familiar with a particular culture to enjoy spending time together. Music, coffee, and physical activities can all serve as natural ways to bring people together.

We feel that mornings have a unique ability to gently break down barriers between different ages, backgrounds, and existing communities.

TMB. has a striking, sophisticated visual identity. What is the concept behind its design?

Our visual identity draws inspiration from the atmosphere of Tokyo's mornings in a constantly changing metropolis, the fluid grooves of music, and the diversity of the neighbors who come together at our events.

Our recently unveiled symbol logo also embodies this philosophy.

Built around black, the logo is designed as a neutral object without being tied to any single direction or meaning. It encompasses TMB.'s various activities, including Run, DJ, and Coffee, without being defined by any one experience.

While serving as the core visual foundation of the brand, it continues to evolve and adapt like a living organism, changing with different activities and locations. This ever-evolving nature itself reflects the identity of TMB. as a free and open space.

We also don't create all of our visuals on our own. Instead, we work collaboratively with designers, photographers, and filmmakers of our generation whom we've built relationships with, operating almost like a creative collective.

Just like our events, our creative process brings people together, allows different perspectives to mix, and gives rise to something new.

What do your regular participants tend to have in common?

Most of our participants are in their 20s and 30s, with a roughly equal balance of men and women. Around 30% have international roots, making TMB. a place where people from different cultures and backgrounds can naturally connect while living in Tokyo.

We also have many returning participants, and with each event, we're seeing more and more familiar faces among our neighbors.

People come for different reasons, but quite a few have always loved club music and now find it harder to go clubbing late at night due to changes in their lifestyles, such as work or family commitments.

Others have grown a little tired of nightlife culture but still love the energy of music and are looking for healthier ways to enjoy it.

We also attract people who are health-conscious and want to make the most of their weekend mornings, as well as those with a strong interest in music, fashion, coffee, wellness, and cultivating a lifestyle that feels true to themselves.

What they all share is an openness to new experiences and meeting new people. TMB. has become a place where people naturally come together across different backgrounds and nationalities, simply because they've chosen to spend the same morning together.

Is there a message you hope to share through your community activities?

Waking up a little earlier, heading out into the city, listening to music, drinking coffee, moving your body, and meeting new people. None of these things are particularly extraordinary on their own, but when they come together, they can create a morning that makes you think, "Today is going to be a good day."

Our goal isn't simply to make people feel glad they came to an event. We want to create moments that make them think, "I like myself a little more for choosing to spend my morning this way."

Feeling a little prouder of yourself than you did yesterday, growing a little fonder of the city you live in, or starting to see someone you've just met as a familiar "neighbor." We hope these small changes carry over into people's everyday lives.

Morning comes equally to everyone. That's why we believe the way we choose to spend it holds new possibilities for making our lives better.

Through Tokyo Morning Beats., we want to create new ways to experience mornings in the city, giving everyone something to look forward to waking up for.

What are your plans and aspirations for the future?

Looking ahead, we want to grow Tokyo Morning Beats. into more than just a large-scale event. Our goal is to develop it into a platform that creates unique morning experiences tailored to each city.

We want to move from place to place, exploring and interpreting the local culture, lifestyles, architecture, and rhythms of the people to design morning experiences that can only happen in those locations.

Even within Tokyo, the character of the morning changes completely from one neighborhood to another. Through music and bringing people together, we hope to discover the hidden charms of places we have yet to explore.

Beyond Japan, we also hope to connect with cities across Asia and the rest of the world, sharing the spirit of Tokyo mornings, where Tokyo Morning Beats. was born, with a global audience.

As people who live in Tokyo ourselves, we want to get to know this city better and grow to love it even more. To do that, we'll continue bringing ideas to life, one by one, that can only happen here.
