Kokubunji is home to a rich underground culture of used bookstores, cafés, record shops and other independent spaces. This talk explores the city’s cultural history from the 1950s to today, looking at its subcultures and counterculture through books, music, cafés and the people who gathered around them. Researcher Katsuya Sasagawa will share stories and discoveries from his research into Kokubunji’s lesser-known cultural layers.
